JS Auto Repairs - Engine Oil

Now we come to a topic of discussion that is probably the most frequently asked question by
all motorists.

What engine oil do i need in my vehicle? There are so many different types how do i know which
one to choose? 20-50w? 10-40w? 15-40w? The list is endless. New vehicles are requiring different types of Oil grade and therefore it is becoming a mine-field for the car enthusiast.

Your vehicle owners book should tell you the type of oil required for your vehicle. Don't be duped into buying the main dealer oil thinking that it must have been designed for the car. This is not correct.
All oil must meet strict specifications and therefore any oil with the same grading as the one your main dealer recommends will be sufficient.

Most pre 1981 cars generally have grade 20-50w oil recommended. From that date until around 1991
15-40w was used with one major exception. The Ford CVH engine as fitted to the Ford Escorts and Orions uses 10-30w. After that cars generally use 10-40w again with one major exception and it's a
Ford again. The Ford ZETEC engine is a very special one when it comes to engine oil.
ONLY USE 5-30w IN THIS TYPE OF ENGINE.

The Zetec engine has very small oil ports and therefore in the morning, whilst the vehicle is cold, oil thicker than 5-30w will not be sufficiently thin enough to lubricate your engine from the very onset.

Oils should always be changed at the intervals recommended by the maintenance manual. These days the life of engine oil is anywhere between 6000 to 15000 miles (or even more)
or six months to one year, whichever occurs first. At times, due to unusual circumstances, there may be shorter periods to change the oil especially if the vehicle only drives short distances and a lot of switching on and off of the engine is involved.

It's always safe to have the level of oil on the dipstick between MIN and MAX marks. You should check the oil level at least once every two weeks or after every 1000 miles and especially before a long journey. It is dangerous for the engine to run with low or no engine oil. The colour of the oil has nothing to do with its ratings or performance, it is merely cosmetic.

Replacement of Oil Filters is normally recommended with every oil change considering the impurities of fuel.

It is a good habit to keep the engine running at idle for few minutes after it is started. You should not rev the engine. This allows the oil to flow all over the moving parts before any load is placed on the engine. Remember, the maximum wear and tear of the engine takes place after it is started for the first time of the day.

JS Auto Repairs can change your engine oil for you. Don't waste time by booking your car into a dealer and paying extortionate prices. Just call us on 01702 316137 to arrange this special service.
